It is the most famous hike in Peru, the Inca trail that allow from the Inca imperial capital of Cusco to go to the mysterious gates of the sacred Machu Picchu.
Few are the experiences that allow to get de amazing Machupicchu at the end of the day and enjoy it’s terraces and temples
One of the little known routes that allow to go to Machu Picchu was discover in 1995 by Fernando Astete (2001). This route clearly since the Inca times was buried by a landslide at any time in its history. The Inca trail begins at km 104 of the Cusco-Machupichu railway, near the small archaeological group of Chachabamba that goes first to the group known as Wiñaywayna, where it joins the Inca Trail between Qoriwayrachina and Machupichu.
Day 1: OLLANTAYTAMBO- KM 104 CHACHABAMBA- WIÑAY-WAYNA- MACHUPICCHU- AGUAS CALIENTES.
The shorter version of the Inca trail begins with an early train from Cusco to the Sacred Valley and to the starting check point Km 104 (named like this ‘cause starting at 104 KM by train from the Ollantaytambo train station). The trekking is around 16 km in total. We will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning to transfer you for approximately 1 hour and a half in private transport to the train station in Ollantaytambo, then we will board a tourist expedition train for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes until the beginning of kilometer 104 of the hike. The trip is very interesting and you will be able to see incredible snow-capped mountains of the Urubamba mountain range. Once at KM 104, you will cross a bridge over the Vilcanota River and go the first stop, CHACHABAMBA, an Inca ruin that was discovered in 1940 and was probably used as an important religious site and checkpoint to protect the east side of Machu Picchu. After a small free time in CHACHABAMBA, you will continue on a cloud-covered trail to Wiñay Wayna, which is the point where the Short Inca Trail joins the Classic Inca Trail. Wiñay Wayna is a good trekking around 3 hours since CHACHABAMBA and climbs 300 vertical meters, so you can start to feel the altitude at this point. Wiñay Wayna is an impressive Inca complex located at 2700 masl that was probably used as the last ritual point on the Inca Trail. After lunch in Wiñaywayna, we will continue through a cloud forest of bromeliad orchids and ferns, where you will walk the last part of the original trail with incredible viewpoints, stone steps and tambos «resting places» and climb 60 steps before arriving to Inti Punku or Sungate get ready for an incredible view of Machu Picchu from the top. For many hikers, the best part of the classic hike.
