Half-Day Tour to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines: An Unforgettable Experience
Half-Day Tour Itinerary to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines
The half-day tour of Moray and the salt mines begins at 9 a.m. with hotel pickup and ends at 3 p.m. It is one of the most popular tours in Cusco, as you visit two very important tourist attractions in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will head to the first stop, the village of Chinchero, where we will see a textile exhibition by the local weavers, who have been practicing this art form since pre-Inca times. We will then continue to the archaeological site of Moray for a tour and explanation. Afterwards, we will visit the village of Maras, where we will taste chocolate with salt and learn about the different types of salt, especially the pink salt. Finally, we will visit the salt mines to take pictures, enjoy the place, and listen to an explanation before returning to the city of Cusco. MORAY: This tourist attraction is very important because these are the only circular terraces we have in Peru.
Here you can see four circular agricultural terraces that were built during the Inca period, which were used to create microclimates and thus generate different temperatures in them, in order to obtain the best quality of Andean agricultural products. These circular terraces also show us the skill of the Inca engineers in the construction of irrigation channels and water transport to each terrace. All this spectacle is surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the eastern Andes. MARAS: This is a beautiful village located in the upper reaches of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, inhabited by approximately 600 families who own the salt mines that bear the same name as the village. In this beautiful place, you can see the colonial stone facades of each house, which show us that at one point in its history, it was a place of great commercial activity. Here, you will have the opportunity to try and taste the different varieties of salt produced by the Maras Salt Mines. SALT MINES: This is a beautiful natural attraction located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you can enjoy more than 2,000 saltwater pools. The salt mine has been in use since pre-Inca times, through the Inca period, and up to the present day. The technique used to harvest the salt is by evaporation of the water, and this only happens during the hottest season of the year (April–October).

Why is it important to choose the best time for the half-day tour to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines?
Choosing the best time to take the half-day tour to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines is essential to get the most out of the experience and enjoy a comfortable and pleasant trip. First, the weather in the Cusco region, where these fascinating tourist destinations are located, can vary significantly throughout the year. During the dry season (May to October), weather conditions are more stable, with clear skies and less chance of rain, making hiking and sightseeing much more enjoyable. This is especially important if you plan to walk through the Maras salt mines or explore the circular terraces of Moray, where the terrain can be slippery during the rainy season.
In addition, by choosing the best time of year for your tour, you can also avoid the crowds that tend to flock to Cusco’s main tourist sites during the high season (June to September). This means you can enjoy the scenery and history of these places in greater peace and quiet, without the congestion of tourists.
On the other hand, although the low season (November to April) is less crowded, it is important to keep in mind that January and February are the rainy season, which can make the experience a little difficult if you are not prepared for the humid weather. However, this period also offers a unique beauty, as the vegetation is greener and more vibrant, which can add a special touch to your tour photos.
